With Starfield being the center of the Xbox 2023 Showcase last week, Bethesda gave us a deep dive into one of the biggest games this generation. Phenotypes are calculated at birth, so using Create a Pet on a pregnant pet will cause her offspring to possibly update their looks. Their other body parts, from ear side and shape to coat colors, are taken into account as well. When Breeding Pets, their paintings do seem to be taken into account when puppies and kittens are rolled for phenotypes. If you write text, the text will appear flipped on the other side of the pet. Note that when using the painting tool, whatever markings you paint will be automatically mirrored to the other side. You can paint entire designs, spots, or other markings on your pets' fur with fine control, you could even paint words or shameless plugs for companies. The button with a palette icon allows your pets to be painted with a simple airbrushing tool similar to many paint programs. Pets also have an additional option in Create a Pet that human Sims do not get.
You cannot change their Traits or Pet Traits from here, although you can by inputting the "testingcheatsenabled on" cheat code, then shift-clicking the Sim and using the "Edit in CAS" command in the pie menu. Similar to human Sims, you can access full body control, name changing, and voice changing by having a Sim use the "Change Sim" interaction on a mirror, which allows all humans and pets in the current family to be edited.
